In 1999 Gary Doust and Matt Wheeldon co-founded Popcorn Taxi, a regular, non-competitive screenings event where filmmakers and enthusiasts could meet, watch films of all types, and discuss the filmmaking process.

From 1999 to 2008 Gary was responsible for programing more than 200 film events with on-stage guests that include Kevin Smith, Sam Rami, George Miller, Dennis Hopper, Baz Luhrmann, Gillian Armstrong, Wim Wenders, Tim Robbins, Danny Boyle, Errol Morris, Phillip Noyce, Roger Corman, Richard Linklater, Philip Glass and Ewan McGreggor.

At the 2000 AFI Awards, Popcorn Taxi was awarded the prestigious Byron Kennedy Award for excellence and innovation in the Australian film industry. More recently Popcorn Taxi won the Inside Film Award for Film Festival of the Year.
